Who is Learning Important Life Skills? RPMS FACS Students!
Students in Mrs. Jennifer Gordon’s sixth grade Family and Consumer Science class at Rocky Point Middle School had a hoot of a time in the class hand sewing unit.
The students learned how to thread a needle, tie a knot, hand sew a button, as well as the running stitch and overcast stitch.
“Hand sewing is an important skill for middle schoolers to learn,” said Mrs. Gordon. “It helps promote creativity, patience, confidence and fine motor skills. It encourages problem-solving and attention to detail, which are essential life skills.”
Student Mya Metzler is using her new sewing skills at home to create more owls. Since the unit has started, more than 20 students have acquired their own sewing kits and supplies outside of school.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to know that my students are truly enjoying what they are learning in my class and more so when they are taking it upon themselves to do it,” said Mrs. Gordon.
