Highlighting Greatness at Rocky Point | Family and Consumer Science Childhood Development Program
A recent visit to Rocky Point High School’s Family and Consumer Science Childhood Development Program highlighted the meaningful impact high school students are having on younger learners. The Childhood Development Program provides juniors and seniors with hands-on experience working with young children while exploring careers in education and related fields.
The long-standing program pairs our students with elementary classrooms from March through June. During this time, students assist the teachers with tasks like morning work, reading and foundational math skills.
Their presence provides valuable support to teachers, but just as important is the connection they build with the younger students. Our students’ engagement creates a positive, encouraging environment that helps the lower school children feel supported and confident in their learning.
The program helps our high school students explore future career pathways in education, child development and related fields. This class also provides students with the opportunity to earn college credit through Adelphi University.
The experience culminates in events such as Field Day, giving both the high school and elementary students an opportunity to celebrate the relationships built throughout the program.
